Basic Knowledge of Carbon Black
Date:2026-06-12 Views:

1. What is carbon black?

Carbon black is a fine black powdery carbon material produced by incomplete combustion or thermal cracking of hydrocarbons. It is not ordinary coal powder. With ultra-fine particles, it is a widely used functional filler in industry.

2. Main Applications

  1. Rubber Industry (Largest Application)It is added to tires, rubber hoses, sealing strips and other products to enhance wear resistance, tensile strength and anti-aging performance. It is the reason why tires are black and durable.

  2. Inks, Coatings and PlasticsIt serves as a black colorant and opacifier, keeping colors pure and fade-resistant under sunlight. It also improves the strength of plastic products.

  3. Other UsesConductive carbon black is applied in anti-static materials, lithium batteries, cables and electronic components.

3. Common Classifications & Distinctions

  • Reinforcing carbon black: Mainly used to improve rubber properties, widely for tires and industrial rubber parts (N series such as N220, N330).

  • Pigment carbon black: Primarily for coloring, divided into high, medium and low pigment grades, used in inks, paints and color masterbatches.

  • Conductive carbon black: Reduces electrical resistance, for conductive and anti-static products.

4. Storage & Operation Precautions

  1. It is lightweight and prone to dust dispersion. Wear protective gear and take dust prevention measures during handling.

  2. It easily absorbs moisture. Store it in a sealed and dry place. Moisture will cause caking and impair its performance.

  3. It is flammable. Keep away from open flames and heat sources, and ensure good ventilation in the warehouse.

5. Common Misconceptions

  1. ❌ Carbon black equals coal powder: They differ completely in raw materials, structure and properties, and cannot be used interchangeably.

  2. ❌ It only works as a colorant: In rubber products, its core function is reinforcement; coloring is just an incidental effect.

  3. ❌ The blacker, the better quality: It depends on application scenarios. Reinforcement matters for rubber, while tinting power counts for plastics. Blackness alone cannot judge quality.

6. Extra Tip

The smaller the particle size of carbon black, the stronger its reinforcing and tinting capacity, yet the harder it is to disperse. Products with larger particles feature good dispersibility and fluidity, suitable for general articles.
